A well-packed box can be carried, stacked and assigned without placing its contents at unnecessary risk. The essentials are a sound container, controlled weight and protection against movement.

Choose suitable boxes

Use dry, undamaged, stackable boxes with strong bases and handles. Small boxes suit dense contents; larger boxes are best for lighter, bulky items.

Open containers and weak reused cartons make stacking and control difficult.

  • Book boxes
  • Standard household boxes
  • Wardrobe boxes where useful
  • Glass dividers
  • Original electronics packaging when available

Distribute weight sensibly

A box must be safely manageable by one person. There is no universal weight because shape and carrying routes differ. Test early and do not fill dense materials to the top.

Place heavier items below lighter ones and fill voids without crushing delicate contents.

  • Split books across small boxes
  • Use textiles only where appropriate
  • Do not overload handles
  • Keep stacks reasonably consistent
  • Close every box fully

Dishes, glass and fragile items

Protect pieces individually. Plates are generally safer supported on edge; glasses need separation and padding below, around and above.

A fragile label supports careful handling but cannot replace proper internal protection.

  • Pad the base
  • Wrap each delicate object
  • Fill voids gently
  • Check for movement
  • Leave protective space at the top

Clothing, documents and electronics

Pack clothes clean and dry. Keep documents ordered and protected; original personal papers travel with you.

Shut down electronics, back up data and photograph connections. Keep labelled cables and accessories with the correct device.

  • Create current backups
  • Control confidential records and media
  • Follow manufacturer battery guidance
  • Protect screens from pressure
  • Use labelled accessory bags

Liquids and unsuitable contents

Only pack permitted liquids when tightly closed, upright and additionally contained. Never mix cleaning products with food.

Flammable, explosive, toxic or otherwise hazardous materials require specific professional clarification and do not belong in ordinary household boxes by default.

  • Check every cap
  • Use leak-resistant secondary containment
  • Keep substances in original labelled containers
  • Do not combine unknown products
  • Ask the appropriate authority about doubtful items

Labels and room allocation

Mark destination room, brief contents and a unique number on the top and at least one side. Use neutral descriptions for sensitive items.

A numbered list provides a simple completion check at the destination.

  • Destination room
  • Open-first priority
  • Fragile and orientation notes
  • Sequential box number
  • Room totals

Avoid common packing mistakes

Overweight boxes, open tops, missing padding and vague labels cause most difficulties. Packing frequently used items too early creates avoidable searching.

Work room by room and in order of use rather than filling random boxes at the last moment.
